I mean, it’s lovely, but come on. This is a pretty nice E39 wagon with under 100k for $5k. Put a manual in there and pocket the remaining $60 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Bring a trailer, take a crackpipe.

you are also missing like an additional engine’s worth of HP

This l ooks to be a pretty competently executed swap. I’d have liked to see the fancy M5 seats installed too.

Nice
car,
but
that’s
ridiculous.

“The seller is my very dear husband. And while I’ve often joked this car made me a “car widow” for many a wrenching weekend, it has brought much joy to him, us and many car buddies over the years.
Thank you to all who have commented, watched and bid on this one-of-a-kind car. Our family could not have imagined a better send off. Biased as I am, the seller deserves all the praise given. He is an exceptional man – even more inspiring than his creation.
Future buyer, as said already, you are fortunate indeed to enjoy the artistry and skill showered onto this car. But know too, ‘it hauls’ beloved memories and masterly-executed, engineering dreams, with plenty of room for yours”.

Sure it’s a lot, but find another one done this well for less. I don’t think you’ll find one at all.

Yes, because not many of them have been made to begin with.
Having something like this made wouldn’t cost more than $35k.

I read that. It’s a nice note :)

How is this possible? Even if I sacrificed a super clean E39 M5 as a donor and tossed the goods into a mint 540i Estate, I would be under half the cost of this thing. Is the labor of the swap worth tens upon tens of thousands of dollars? If so, I’m quitting my job and opening up a swap shop.

It is a v ery thorough and professional swap. But that winning bid ? C’mon!

You think, 35k all in, or plus car? Either way that’s a long project to DIY, even a long project for a shop (if you can find one willing to take it on).

We should also discuss this:
This garage does explain the “car widow” comment.

Ok, It might come out to $40k.
T his is my mental math - a bout $30k for cars and parts and $10k labor. ( $6 k car, $10k engine, $14 k transmission, suspension, wheels, seats, steering .)

My god.....I hadn’t seen that picture.
That is an impressive garage!

I’d tack on another 2k for the iDrive bits and integration. I’m betting it would be closer to 50k and a lot of work even if you’re not the one turning the wrench. (sourcing parts, choosing a shop, staying on top of shop). So time investment on top of the cost.
72 is a premium for sure, but if I had 40-50k for a fun mobile like this. I would easily spend another 10k to buy one that was complete and done well. That additional 10-15k that BaT brought here is because you’ve got a bunch of people thinking the same way that I am with a lot more money in their pockets. That combined with the emotions involved with buying at auction....$70kish seems spot on.
It’s easy for me to set a price and walk away when a car is at a private seller/dealer with a price tag. I more than doubled my original budget when I bought at auction. After that first bid or two it’s like “ok I’ll go one more.” Then another and another and another.

sounds good to me!
I was already planning to s62 swap my e39 wagon when the current engine dies. I always thought the amount to convert it wouldn’t be worth it, this proves otherwise!

I see what you mean....
The iDrive doesn’t make sense to me though. What would you even control? The E39 didn’t come with an iDrive and I sure hope the integration didn’t involve handing over button controls to iDrive lol

As I told a friend, you could do this yourself for 25 grand
or pay someone to do it for 50. Either way you’re at least
$20,000 ahead. Someone got a little too excited in the ‘bidding war’ for this.

I’m not sure “impressive” suffices. That place is a temple to the car. I can’t really imagine working in there. I make more of a mess making chocolate chip cookies. It’s a six-figure playroom for an adult. It’s almost like, the space deserves a better car than an
E39 wagon. Or maybe I should just say, props to this guy for having good taste and not just buying something new off the dealer lot.
I wonder what he’ll have next. Because there’s no way that space is just going to be where he changes the oil on his wife’s Lexus RX or whatever.

Yea, weird move with the iDrive. Way cheaper and better to go with a modern car play enabled double din aftermarket unit. Personally I wouldn’t even care to have that.
